An email just popped in our inboxes titled, “Street Nationals / Night of Fire Orlando Speed World Dragway”, and was confusing for us because we already held an interview about the 2011 race cancellation. We immediately called track manager Carl Weisinger and are awaiting a call back for the details.
The one change we immediately noticed was that the race has been condensed from four days to just two, putting a full day of tech and qualifying on Friday November 18th, and a long day of final qualifying and eliminations on Saturday. “It’s a 8 car open field in all classes,” said Carl Weisinger. “They had a big race setup on the stock car track for that Friday and a few days ago they cancelled the event, so we decided to put on condensed race along with the Night of Fire.”
Another strange twist is that the new OWSN date is the same weekend as the large west coast Street Car Super Nationals race in Las Vegas. Weisinger commented, “No one is coming to Orlando for an eight car race. I didn’t have another date I could go to with NMCA Indy, ORTC GA, and the Radial Race at Bradenton all happening on the east coast around that time. I am just glad we can provide a place to race for the Florida cars that can’t afford to tow out to SCSN.”
“I still love Mel. He is still the best guy I had come work for me. I had no intentions to compete with him and his race.”
