Car Guys & Gals Unite: Michigan Drag Strip Needs Your Help!

There are few communities more tightly-knit than the “Car guys (and Gals!)” as a whole. Sure, there are some divisive rivalries and some never-ending smack talk among the automotive factions, but when it comes to helping a needy cause, this group of men and women can always be counted on to come together for the cause. That unity is needed now in Lansing Michigan, where the resurgent Onondaga Dragway faces a daunting legal hurdle in its journey to reopen its gates after being dormant for over 35 years.

The facility was shut down all the way back in 1976 in the face of financial stresses and sat unused until last fall. The owners finally earned a special-use permit from the local government, seemingly overcoming the longest of odds and returning the facility to good working order, but the jubilation was short-lived, as neighbors launched campaigns against the track and won an injunction that shuttered the doors again. The owners, having poured their hearts and souls into the facility along with their life savings, fought valiantly and had all but one of the complaints thrown out. However, there is one remaining complaint that has proven stubbornly effective in keeping the doors closed, as well as draining the last of the owners’ legal funds.

That’s where YOU come in! Thanks to the helpful folks at Springport Motor Speedway in nearby Springport Michigan, Onondaga has planned a fundraiser to help secure a tenacious legal team to help have the last complaint removed and allow Onondaga to resume racing operations. The fundraiser, a car show held at Springport Motor Speedway, will be held on July 27th from 2 p.m. until 6 p.m.. All of the organization and work is being done by a staff of volunteers so that all of the money raised can go toward the legal fund itself. Registration is only $10, and spectator admission is $1.00. The show is open to all makes and models of car, truck, and motorcycle.

Hopefully the automotive community in the greater Lansing area and beyond will pull together and make this show a success, leading to the reopening of Onondaga Dragway for the Car Guys & Gals in the area to enjoy!
