The turbocharged combination that’s taken quarter-mile Pro Modified racing by storm has yet to put a dent in the armor of the screw-blown combos that comprise the ADRL Pro Extreme division, but you can’t fault the turbo faithful for trying, and in time, their tireless efforts may very well pay off.
It appears the turbo camp in the ADRL is about to gain another charter member, as the El General Racing team pairs up once again with Proline Racing on this brand spankin’ new ’69 Camaro fresh out of the Jerry Bickel Race Cars shop in Missouri.
These are the first photos of the new Camaro, which looks to be well on its way to completion.
The lightweight new Camaro will be powered by an Alan Johnson 481X powerplant built by Proline with a pair of hairdryers out front. Gonzalez and company hope to have the car complete by the end of May and on-track for testing in early June.
“Our goal is to the be the first turbo car in the 3.70 range and then first into the 3.60’s,” Said Gonzalez. “We know it will take some time, but I think the whole team is committed to achieving this goal.”
“I”ll be trying to get better and better each day, as I’ve only been driving turbo cars since October. I’ve gotten comfortable inside the car pretty quick; of course that’s because of the great team at Proline, the great tuning of Steve Petty, and my entire crew. Those guys have made my job pretty easy with their hard work and experience.”
The Florida-based El General team, with driver Jose Gonzalez at the controls, teamed with Eric Dillard, Steve Petty, and the crew at Proline last fall with a new engine combination and the move paid dividends immediately, as Gonzalez rode Petty’s tuning prowess all the way to the Blown Pro Mod crown at the Shakedown at E’Town in convincing fashion with the teams’ first five-second run.
With Proline in their corner, no doubt that Gonzalez and El General just might make a little noise (no pun intended) in Pro Extreme.
