Putting the perfect race weekend together where you make it to the final round takes experience, preparation, and luck. Being able to make the final and do it while setting a new personal best is even better, and Team Z Motorsports-sponsored Brad Edwards did just that at No Mercy V. Edwards took his hot rod from being on jack stands just ten days before the race all the way to the final round of Radial vs. The World.

This year has been a challenge for Edwards to get his blue Mustang to the track, hence why it why it had not been out since the NMRA/NMCA event at Atlanta Dragway in April. Edwards explains, “We had no full passes on the car with this new combo. We managed to make two 330-foot hits at Mooresville Dragway before we rolled into SGMP.”

edwards 1Edwards’s car was built in 2011 by Team Z and uses all of the company’s off the shelf parts that anybody can purchase – there is no trickery here, just well-thought-out components that are designed to handle insane abuse. The Mustang’s chassis is actually one-hundred-percent X275 legal but fits into the true spirit of Radial vs. The World with its full frame and non-billet 562 cubic-inch big block Chevy powerplant pumped up by twin 94mm Garrett turbos.

Getting to the final took some luck and hard work for Edwards and his team. They were able to find a problem, address it, and become a player at No Mercy.

“A new torque converter from Cameron’s Torque Converter Services and the Profiler Traction Management System we have been testing for Davis Technologies made the difference,” said Edwards.

Mixing all the new parts together with hard work allowed Edwards to become the number eight qualifier and the first stock suspension car in the 4.teens. Edwards made it all the way to the final before falling to Jamie Hancock – not a bad result for throwing a car back together in less than two weeks and hitting the road virtually untested!
