John Mihovetz Off To Good Start In His Pro Street Mustang

Back in November we first got word that Steve Matusek was selling off his Mustang to John Mihovetz, to start on his new endeavor of building an all carbon fiber 2010 piece. His old ride has had some significant changes, but one thing stayed the same as the keys changed hands – the car is still at the front of the field. From looking at the spec sheet, many thought that Matusek was under-gunned with a rather small displacement modular motor at just over 320 cubic inches, but he definitely made it work. Mihovetz didn’t take the easy way out however, by going with an even smaller motor in this ride.

Check out some photos posted by George Klass on Yellowbullet, that highlight the car’s most recent significant changes.

The general underlying paint scheme stayed the same, though all the Aeromotive decals were removed and replaced with ones from Lucas Oil Products and Accufab. The car is now powered by a 281 cubic inch 4 valve modular motor that gets the boost charge from a set of 80mm Precision turbos. Dyno testing of this combo resulted in 2500hp at 9200 rpm, quite the number for a relatively small engine. Rumor has it that this is the same engine as what powered the Accufab Cougar, backed up by the same Lenco transmission as well, so they’ve got numerous hours of data and testing with this drivetrain. The car weighs in at about #2460 with John in the car per PSCA’s Pro Street rules. One other noticeable change is the upturned exhaust that many teams have been experimenting with, seems to be working well also.

Well the PSCA season has kicked off this year with Mihovetz already making an impressive showing early on. At the Spring Break Super show in Fontana, Mihovetz was able to take the #2 spot in qualifying by driving the Mustang to a 6.46 at 228, still while pedaling twice briefly during the run. The team hopes to get the car sorted out and go after some 6.20’s if all goes well, on the positive side they are getting closer every weekend. When it came to eliminations John blasted through the first two rounds, getting a bye run in the second round but still pounding out a stout 6.51. When it came to the third round Mihovetz just didn’t have enough however, running a 6.62 compared to Maggio’s 6.45. They may not have come out on top, but they gained alot of valuable info from this race, look for the Lucas Oil/Accufab Mustang to be a heavy hitter in the PSCA Pro Street ranks this year.
