One person was killed Saturday afernoon when struck by an errant race car during the Detroit Dragway Reunion held at Michigan’s Milan Dragway.

Video of the incident showed a vintage Funny Car driven by 31-year-old Nicholas J. Tilley backing up from its burnout, when the car suddenly and unexpectedly accelerated just behind the starting line. The car struck one individual and another race vehicle sitting near the burnout box, before coming to rest. That man, identified as 78-year-old Keith C. Hallett, died from his injuries.

Police and crews from the Milan Area Fire Department responded to the crash at the race track in western Monroe County at approximately 5:33 p.m. and began attending to the injured. Crews from Milan Fire were already on-site for the event. The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, Monroe Community Ambulance, and Huron Valley Ambulance also responded to the incident. Eyewitnesses reported that what is believed to have been a medical helicopter responded to the raceway, but did not land.

Milan Dragway officials later canceled the remainder of the event, doing so out of respect to those injured.
