Much of what makes up the American drag racing culture has had a trickle down effect to various other countries around the world, and it looks like the popular concept of the anything-goes Extreme 10.5 class is catching on across the pond.
Following last weekend’s 2010 Nitro Champs race at Sydney Dragway in Australia, a couple of race teams bolted on a set of 10.5W tires to their lightweight, full tube chassis vehicles for a little grudge race of sorts. Why they chose to go with W’s for the particular race is anyone’s guess, but it’s possible that much like here in the states, the curiosity to find out just how quick and fast they can on the smaller tire got the best of them.
The challengers were Frank Mamone and his supercharged, 471 cubic inch Hemi Nova and the Gas Motorsports 2JZ Toyota Scion with none other than Ben Bray – a Top Doorslammer racer and son of legendary Austrialian drag racer Victor Bray – behind the wheel. The Gas Motorsports Scion is actually one of Titan Motorsports’ former cars and it looks like those guys may be turning heads with it over there, just as Team Titan is here.
Watching from enough camera angles to rival ESPN, Bray takes the Scion for an exciting lap down the quarter mile to a pretty stout 6.689 at 209.23 miles per hour, beating Mamone by roughly a car length at the stripe. The scoreboard in the left lane isn’t visible, but Frank looked to be on a high 6.7 second lap, possibly hurting some parts in the process with the big screaming Hemi before dipping it in the sand.
Could this have been an exhibition to test the waters for a possible Extreme 10.5-like category over in the Land of Oz? We shall see. The doorslammer crazy fans over there would certainly be all over it.
