Classes like NMRA Hot Street or the RAM N/A series have shown us what the all-out, no cent spared naturally aspirated small blocks are capable of – we’re going a little more grass-roots on this one. During the Chrysler Classic in Colombus, OH one racer wasn’t chasing a world record or an Outlaw 10.5 title, but what he did accomplish was running his personal best to date – a 9.53 @ 137 mph in his ’68 Dodge Dart.

After getting a trouble-some torque converter squared away along with replacing a fried two step, the wheels-up 9.53 is in the books for Aquick408. Quite the improvement from running 10’s in the same car just a couple short years ago. The 9.53 was good, but Aquick408 wants more as he says he’s reaching for 9.40’s by summer-time, and hopefully squeeze into the 9.20’s with the current engine package. A few significant changes will be needed if the blast for an 8-second time slip is to be made, but we aren’t ruling out that possibility just yet.
OK, we know it’s N/A, we know it’s a sweet classic Mopar, but what about the real drivetrain specifics? Right here – lying in that smoothly detailed engine bay is a 360-based 408 cubic inch stroker with a set of CNC ported Indy heads, Indy intake and a 1050 Dominator carburetor. While the 30+ year old ladder bar setup worked well when the car was running in the 10’s, it was ditched in favor of a much improved modern 4-link rear suspension with the new engine combination. Stay tuned to see what this awesome A-body accomplishes next.
