Over the weekend, Mike Maggio from San Dimas, California became the first Pro Street racer to crack into the five-second zone while competing at the Super Chevy Show at the Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway behind the wheel of his supercharged 1970-1/2 Camaro.
During Saturday’s second round of qualifying for the PSCA Pro Street category, an added points-paying attraction to the touring Super Chevy Show, Maggio cranked off a great 6.007 at 237.34 miles per hour to pace the sixteen car field. Then, in the final session that evening, lit up the scoreboards with a crushing 5.973 at 245.54 miles per hour to etch his name into the record books.
The MagCo Drilling Camaro then followed that performance up with an encore 5.976 at 244.83 in an opening round defeat of Steve Horne, followed by a 6.030 at 240.12 win over Perry Thyr in round two, a 6.000 at 244.60 in the semifinals, and a 6.027 at 243.77 rout of Ed Thornton in the money round to put a camp on a dominating and record-breaking weekend of racing.
Maggio just missed recording the first Pro Street “five” two weeks ago at the PSCA Racin’ 4 Jason Nationals, also held in Vegas, when he recorded an oh-so-close 6.000 in the first round of eliminations, and a barrage of 6.0-second laps proved that performance was no fluke.
Maggio and the rest of the Pacific Street Car Association competitors will be back in action May 20-22 for the Hughes Performance California Nationals in Fontana.
