Marc Meadors, President of the Goodguys Rod & Custom Association, drove his “Pure Hell 2” ’69 Camaro to the final round at the recent 34th annual Great American Fox Hunt at the Firebird Raceway in Boise, Idaho in the West Coast Outlaw Pro Modified category, falling to Lee Smith’s 1958 Corvette in the money round.
Coming off a career best elapsed time of 5.83 while testing over Memorial Day weekend, Meadors and team had every bit of confidence as they pulled into Boise and it showed on the racetrack as they qualified third with a great 6.181 at 234.55 mph, which was low ET of the final qualifying session.
During the opening round of Pro Modified eliminations, Meaders downed Dan Nicholson and his 2002 Dodge Viper with a 6.132 at 236.46 that would stand as top speed of eliminations. In round two, Meaders dispatched the ’57 Chevy of his nemesis John “Wapadoo” Scialpi with a 6.222 at 235.78 to advance him into the final round matchup with Smith. There however, Smith saved his best run of the day for the final round, recording a 6.293 at 228.02 while Meadors struggled to get ahold of the racetrack and pedaled his way to a losing 7.73 at 130 mph effort.
“That’s drag racing for ya,” Meadors said after his first final round appearance of the season. “Sometimes the fastest car doesn’t win. My hat is off to Lee and his team for their deserving win. We thought we had a great shot to win it. We were the quicker and faster car but didn’t put the traction down in the money round. The guys and I will learn from this and move on to Medford next week. My hat’s off to the Goodguys Rod & Custom Association, Red Line Oil, Darren Mayer of DMPE, Tim McAmis Race Cars and Bunker Race Cars. And of course my crew guys for all the hours and all the work they put in.”
Meadors and company were back in action a week later at the 5th annual “Night of Fire” at Champion Raceway in Medford, Oregon, where he qualified fourth in the West Coast Outlaw Pro Modified field. In the opening round, he used a 6.502 at 218.37 to dispose of Dan Myers before falling to Bret Williamson in the second round, 7.30 to 7.84.
Meadors and the rest of the West Coast Outlaw Pro Mods will be back at it July 22-24 at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, CA as part of the NHRA Division 7 Lucas Oil Series event.
