Half a world away, Australian Top Doorslammer competitor robin Judd is already making waves before the 2011-12 ANDRA Pro Series Australian Drag Racing Championship even officially gets underway, as he reeled off a record-breaking 5.77 elapsed time at a booming 250 miles per hour in a tuneup to the season-opening Fuchs Australian Nationals at the Sydney Dragway this week.
At 5.779-seconds, Judd and his supercharged 1953 Studebaker cruised right on by the Top Doorslammer national record numbers set in the land down under (what great song lyrics that would make) by John Zappia at 5.805-seconds. Having occurred in testing, however, these numbers are completely unofficial and unrecognized. Certainly recognized by the competition, but not the officials, anyway.
ANDRA’s Top Doorslammer regulations allow for D-Rotor screw blowers at 108% overdrive maximum or roots superchargers at 70% with 20-inch rotors. Cars may utilize six-finger clutches with one-stage lockup, or any automatic transmission, with traction control expressly prohibited.
Making Judd’s lap all the more impressive is the rather soft 1.001 short time, although the ‘stude certainly made up for it in the back half, going 2.576 to the 330′ clocks, 3.819 at 199.67 to half track, 4.880 to 1000’, and 5.779 at 250.18 out the back door.
