This weekend, the fabled Rockigham Dragway will once again host the largest event on the American Drag Racing League schedule as rabid North Carolina racing fans will fill the hillside grandstands to the breaking point.
“The Rock”, located in what racing fans generally refer to as Middle-of-Nowhere North Carolina, has been an integral part of the drag racing landscape since its opening in 1970 and has operated under both NHRA and IHRA sanctioning, although it’s most known as an IHRA facility, where Southern drag racers put the track squarely on the map. Steve Earwood, who presently owns and operates the dragstrip, assumed ownership in 1992 and took it to even greater heights, operating weekly events from February through November and bringing in virtually every major racing organization; including at one time the prestigious NHRA Winston Invitational.
On this Flashback Friday, we take a look back at the early years of the Rockingham Dragway with footage from the 1975 IHRA Pro-Am Nationals, which was re-broadcast on Speedvision in recent years and was converted to YouTube for our viewing pleasure. Witness the likes of legends such as Shirl Greer, Gene Snow, Richard Tharpe, Bob Glidden, Raymond Beadle, Denny Savage the famous ‘Chi-Town Hustler,’ and even North Carolina’s own Roy Hill.
