Chuck DeMory Jr. is bringing a little of the “street” back to NMCA Pro Street in 2012.
The second generation racer, whose competed in the Nostalgia Pro Street category for the last two seasons with his stunningly gorgeous ’68 Mustang, is set to make the transition up the proverbial ladder to the Pro Street category this season, where his trusty naturally-aspirated big block combination will give way to an F3 supercharger from ProCharger. Unlike most of his soon-to-be counterparts in the series’ preeminent category, DeMory Jr.’s ride remains the flesh of a production vehicle: steel quarters, roof, A-pillars, and the like. No narrowed, chopped, and scaled carbon fiber here.
“Dave Werremeyer from ProCharger felt confident that between the ProCharger F3 and the crank drive unit that debuted at PRI, our current combination and racing experience, ProCharger would be in the Pro Street winner’s circle, and we’re confident we can manage the power that the ProCharger will provide through the big tires and Jerry Bickel chassis,” Demory Jr. said in an FSC interview. “The car is very unique in the fact that it was a true street car, not a Pro Modified car with a narrowed carbon-fiber body. It has steel quarters, roof and A-pillars, and it will have a new look because we’re ditching the large hood scoop and fiberglass front end for a lightweight carbon fiber front end with a cowl hood.”
The 640-inch big block Ford in DeMory Jr.’s Mustang features Thor Gen 2 heads, and will soon carry a custom EFI manifold from John Marcella at Marcella Manifolds, with dual fuel rails and oversized throttle bodies, fed by a Waterman Lil’ Bertha fuel pump and dual Precision injectors. The engine conversion is being performed by Kris Nelson of Nelson Competition Engines. The supercharged mill will be backed by a Proformance Racing Transmissions-prepped three-speed mated with a Coan billet aluminum converter. Drag Radial champ Jason Lee and Patrick Barnhill of PTP Racing will provide the tuning calls, utilizing a Big Stuff 3 engine management setup.
DeMory Jr. hopes to make his debut in Pro Street in Atlanta or Maryland, the second and third stop on the NMCA schedule.
