Excitement continues to build for the first year of the American Drag Racing League SuperCar Showdown Series, with Ford showing the Mopar crowd how it’s done. But the ADRL may not be the only one pinning Mustang Cobra Jets, Challenger Drag Paks and soon, COPO Camaros against one another in heads-up competition this year. Rumor has it that the National Hot Rod Association may also be running a special factory race car event, actually borrowing the SuperCar Showdown concept for a special race come Labor Day weekend. Granted, this is only a rumor for now, albeit a strong one.
For the last month or so, we’ve heard rumors that the NHRA will be hosting a special SuperCar Showdown-style race at the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals at Indianapolis later this month, with the latest report coming from the Class Racer forum. Just like the ADRL’s new series, the special race is supposed to feature factory race cars from Ford and Dodge in a heads-up, no breakout competition. Although the NHRA race will certainly not be called the SuperCar Showdown, it is expected to be similar in premise.
According to the latest rumor, the special race will take place on Friday of the U.S. Nats with eliminations starting early in the day. This would allow the specialty race to compliment the popular HEMI Shootout that night. There has also been talk that the SuperCar-style race could also be held on Saturday.
No official announcement has been made by the NHRA on the rumored race yet, but if they’re going to pull it off, there is no better place to do it than the biggest and most prestigious drag race in the world. With the U.S. Nats coming up in just a couple months, we expect the NHRA to either confirm or deny the rumors any day now.
