Leah Pruett’s successful career with the R2B2 Racing Team came to a close last Sunday in Las Vegas as she and her ProCare Rx Mustang fell to Don Walsh and his turbo Mustang in the final round of the Big O Tires NHRA Nationals.
“It’s a bittersweet end to the season,” Pruett said. “We wanted to go out with a bang, but everyone on the team is ending the year with warm feelings.”
Go out with a bang she did, as Walsh came around her and the pink Mustang in the finals to cross the line for the win. Pruett suffered from turbo failure during the final run leaving her to run 6.704 at 159.21 mph to Walsh’s 5.917 at 251.58 mph.
“I got to the half-track timers and a puff of smoke comes out the left side. I knew instantly the turbo let go. A split second later the motor shut off. Then his red Mustang went flying by me. That was it.”
Pruett, whom started her run with Roger Burgess’ R2B2 Racing Team in 2011 says, “I can’t thank Roger Burgess enough for the opportunity he gave me for the last two years. He gave me a chance to prove myself as a driver and expand my driving talents in Pro Mod and Funny Car. I’ll always be in his debt for what he’s done for me.”
Leah also says that at the present her current plans are unsure, but she is willing to consider any offer that would cross her path. “Right now I just plan on going to our banquet and celebrating the season with my teammates,” she said. “After that, I’m exploring all the options on the table. I’ve always had a passion for nitro, and I hope to get an opportunity to race on that level next season.”
