
While the completion of eliminations at the PDRA’s season-opening Carolina Nationals at the legendary Darlington Dragway may have been postponed as a result of unsafe track conditions, the weekend wasn’t without its winners.
The same unseasonably cool weather conditions that ultimately brought the event to an early conclusion also produced incredible numbers on the race track, particularly in the Pro Boost category, where a pair of the class’ heaviest hitters traded the national E.T. record during qualifying and eliminations.
During Friday evening’s final Pro Boost qualifier under the lights, Randy Weatherford powered his supercharged machine to a 3.543 at 212.26 mph, eclipsing Derek Ward’s two-year-old national record pass of 3.555 seconds and scoring the event’s No. 1 qualifier award. Weatherford backed up his run within the required one percent on a red-lighting 3.562 in round one, but the event’s No. 4 qualifier, Canonsburg, Pennsylvania’s John Camp, was quietly making what would become a national record backup run of his own in the opening stanza, when he ousted John Dougherty with a 3.563 age 213.57 mph.

In round two, Camp and his tuner, Brandon Stroud, set the “Hells Bells” 1969 Camaro — sporting power from a ProLine Racing Hemi with a ProCharger supercharger — on kill, as it stormed to a 3.542 at 213.88 mph to drive around Raymond Matos for the round win. With the required backup already in hand, Camp delivered the class’ performance benchmark back to the ProCharger contingent.
Camp was to face Melanie Salemi in the semifinals before the postponement, and will do so at the PDRA East Coast Nationals, April 16-18, at Darana Motorsports Park in Dunn, North Carolina.
Camps’ machine sports ProCharger’s latest version of the F4X-140-1, which was debuted late last summer. To further strengthen the design and to elevate the horsepower capabilities of its flagship superchargers, ProCharger’s engineers went back to the drawing board with the 140 and developed new and improved impellers and a larger housing with V-band-style mounting flanges built in, for the bellmount inlet and for the charge pipe.
