For the first time in his racing career, Goodguys Rod & Custom Association President Marc Meadors ran the table behind thw wheel of his “Pure Hell 2” supercharged Chevrolet Camaro, setting low elapsed time, recording top speed, and winning the Little Caesars’s “Foxhunt” at the Firebird Raceway in Boise, Idaho in late June.
Meadors and his crew made five runs over the course of the day at the facility in the Idaho foothill country, setting both ends of the track record on his way to victory lane. With just five cars in attendance, Meadors earned a competition bye in the first round as a result of his No. 1 qualifying effort. Not one to take it easy on a solo run, Meadors and crew chief Jason Bunker poured the coals to the Pure Hell 2 Camaro, obliterating Brett Williamsons’ two-year old track record with a stout 5.915 at 246.10 mph blast.
Meadors and Bunker turned the car back around for the semifinals and disposed of Lee Smith and his late model Mustang with another great run, a 5.937 at 244.76, that officially backed up the earlier 5.91 and 246 mph numbers for new Firebird Raceway Pro Mod track records.

In the final round, Meadors squared off with one of his early Pro Modified heroes, Southern California’s John “Wopadoo” Scialpi and his famous blown ’57 Chevrolet. When Meadors was just a teenager working under his father, Gary “Goodguy” Meadors, as an event promoter, it was his job to book-in exhibition drag cars, and usually, his first call was Scialpi.
With the sun down and the lights turned on, Meadors and Scialpi took the tree for their final round matchup. But before it could even get interesting, Scialpi, attempting to push the tree against the quicker Meadors, red-lighted, handing over the win right from the start. Meadors legged his Camaro through to a 7.11 for the victory.
In the end, Meadors was quick to credit his Goodguys Racing Team and the Firebird Raceway staff for providing the race car and the racing surface to accomplish what is certainly a rare feat in drag racing.
“You dream of days like these but any racer will tell you they’re rare,” Meadors said. “Very, very rare. My guys get all the credit. Crew chief Jason Bunker was aggressive, taking shots all evening. Sometimes it goes your way and it sticks. Today was one of those days.”
“Hats off to the New Crew” Meadors said of the Firebird staff. “They’re so fun to race for. The crew here always has the track in tip top shape and the fans here are awesome. For racers, it’s one of the top tracks in the country as we always get what we need here to give the fans the best show for their money. Not sure I’m gonna need a plane to fly home tonight.”
