Radial tire racing has evolved into one of the most competitive forms of drag racing. The X275 class, in particular, is one of the most challenging small-tire categories thanks to its tight ruleset and brutal performance demands. At US 60 Dragway during the Battle For The Thrones event, the X275 class record fell once again, this time courtesy of Davey Hull.

Eric LaFerriere previously held the record after laying down a blistering 4.033-second pass behind the wheel of “White Rice,” a 2JZ-powered Nissan 240SX owned by Duy Bui. The Nissan continued to make impressive runs after resetting the record, but many believed X275 was still a long way from creeping closer to the three-second zone. As it turns out, they were wrong.

Hull’s performance at US 60 Dragway didn’t come as a surprise to those paying attention. At the Bama Outlaws event earlier in the season, Hull had already shown serious speed by posting a 4.07 at 176 mph.

Conditions at US 60 Dragway were outstanding, and the track surface was exceptional. That gave John Kolivas and his team the confidence to load a more aggressive tune-up into Hull’s Mustang during the second qualifying session.

The Bennett Racing Engines-powered Mustang spooled up its Harts 88mm turbo and dropped a bomb on the X275 field with a record-setting 4.029 at 178 mph. The pass included a stout 1.0040 60-foot time and a 2.6558 330-foot number, officially resetting the X275 record.

“Seems like yesterday we powered the first car to break the 4.40 barrier in X275, and now here we are at 4.02,” Kolivas says. “That speaks volumes about the evolution of this class, but more importantly, it’s a testament to the hard work behind our engine development, the advancements from our vendor partners, and the drive and commitment of our customer teams.”

Now the big question has to be asked: Can X275 break into the three-second zone? Hull’s run proved the possibility is real. Now it’s simply a matter of who can put together the perfect pass and officially push X275 into that magical territory.
