In a surprise announcement on social media, the International Hot Rod Association (IHRA) revealed that it is significantly reducing its remaining 2026 schedule across its verticals, including several events in the Outlaw Nitro Series.

The revised schedule removes events at Darana Dragway–Milan, Empire Dragway, Darana-Heartland Motorsports Park, and Atlanta Dragway. In their place, the updated calendar now features events at Darana Dragway–West Salem, the IHRA Triple Crown at Darana Raceway–Maple Grove, and the season finale at Darana Motorsports Park–Benson.

Facility Readiness Drives Schedule Changes

According to the IHRA, one of the primary reasons for the revised schedule is the challenge of preparing several facilities to host national-level events.

That includes both the Atlanta and Memphis facilities, which require extensive rehabilitation before they can safely host major racing events.

“We understand many people will be disappointed by this decision, and quite honestly, so are we,” said Dustin Farthing, President of the IHRA. “Our goal must be to build facilities and create experiences that our racers, fans, and communities can be proud of. Working with cities, counties, and contractors on projects of this scale takes time, and we were optimistic about what could be accomplished within our original timeframe.

“At the end of the day, the IHRA has a standard that we intend to uphold. Opening a facility that isn’t ready or doesn’t meet our expectations doesn’t benefit our racers, fans, or partners. Rather than continue pushing timelines back, we felt it was important to make a clear decision and continue the work necessary to ensure these facilities open at the level everyone deserves.”

Budget Concerns Mentioned In Organization-Wide Announcement

The IHRA’s broader announcement, which addressed revisions to its powerboat racing schedule as well as other IHRA disciplines, also referenced financial concerns.

The organization stated:

“The International Hot Rod Association (IHRA) today announced revisions to its remaining 2026 powerboat racing schedule, as well as all other IHRA disciplines, as the organization continues making significant adjustments to budgets that were exceeded early in the season. The moves are designed to strengthen the long-term future of its marine racing divisions while allowing the organization to reset and build a refreshed 2027 schedule more closely aligned with the original vision established by IHRA Owner and CEO Darryl Cuttell.”

Notably, the separate Outlaw Nitro Series announcement did not mention budget issues as a reason for the schedule revisions.

Focus On Infrastructure And Fan Experience

Beyond improvements to race facilities, the IHRA also outlined plans to modernize several aspects of the organization.

According to the announcement, additional upgrades are planned for the IHRA website, ticketing system, and fan engagement tools. The organization says these behind-the-scenes improvements are intended to create a better overall experience for racers, fans, sponsors, and partners.

“As President of the IHRA, my responsibility is to do what is best for the long-term success of our organization, our facilities, and the racers, teams, sponsors, and fans who support us,” added Farthing. “Every decision we make will be guided by our commitment to creating first-class experiences that everyone involved can be proud of.”

Looking Ahead To 2027

Whether these schedule revisions represent a warning sign for the IHRA or a strategic decision to slow down and strengthen the organization’s foundation remains to be seen.

The changes come after a season that has included several operational challenges and management changes throughout 2026. By reducing the schedule now, the IHRA appears to be prioritizing long-term stability over short-term expansion.

Attention will now shift toward 2027, when the organization is expected to unveil a revised schedule that reflects both its infrastructure improvements and its long-term vision for the future of IHRA drag racing.
