The hot and humid late summer weather that’s a staple of the NHRA’s prestigious U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis rarely presents record-setting conditions for the hundreds of racers that travel from around the nation to be a part of the world’s biggest and baddest drag race. But in the Stock and Super Stock ranks, everyone brings their best stuff to the “Big Go” to get in the ultra-tight field and maybe, just maybe, take home a heads-up class victory.

And sometimes, those everything-but-the-kitchen-sink efforts result in some sub-record numbers, which just happened to be the case at this year’s 60th anniversary running of the U.S. Nationals.

But this wasn’t just any sub-record number. It was THE record. As in, the quickest pass ever. and it was accomplished by the son of a drag racing icon — Louisiana’s Paul ‘P.B.’ Candies.

Candies cranked off the quickest Super Stock pass in history in an opening round loss to Scott Richardson in Super Stock class eliminations on Friday morning, going 7.859-seconds at 170.02 miles per hour. The run eclipsed his own record set back in April, when his 2010 Cobra Jet Ford Mustang reeled off a 7.880 at just north of 171 miles per hour at the IHRA’s Division 4 Summit Pro-Am Tour event at the State Capitol Raceway in Baton Rouge, La.

Prior to the record run, Candies ran 7.91 and a 7.89 on the 8.80 SS/AAA index on the opening day of the event, qualifying him 45th in the field to that point.

Candies’ gorgeous Mustang, a more heavily-modified but legit Cobra Jet, has power from a 5.4L supercharged small block Ford under the hood.
