John Stanley has been around drag racing all his life and is solidly among the top veteran doorslammer pilots in the sport. From his days of running in the NMCA to now competing at the highest levels in the PDRA Pro Extreme class, Stanley has always been a threat to win any event he enters. Now, Stanley along with the Stanley & Weiss racing team, have their eyes set on making a run at the Pro Extreme title starting at the PDRA North-South Shootout at Maryland International Raceway June 1-3rd.

The Larry Jeffers Race Cars built 2014 Cadillac CTS-V that Stanley drives is one of the most recognizable and perhaps underestimated cars in the Pro Extreme ranks. For 2017 the team stepped up their engine program with a new 524 cubic-inch bullet from Noonan Race Engineering to make their mark on the Pro Extreme class. The motor is now using a Noonan block, along with Noonan’s signature billet cylinder heads designed to take all of the boost the PSI Superchargers screw blower can throw at it.

According to Stanley, there were some other changes made with the car for this year to help add performance at the track.

“We went from a Lenco-drive to the Quickdrive transmission for this year. To go with the new Quickdrive we also added a bolt-together, lock-up torque converter from Neal Chance Racing Converters to help the car reach its potential.”

So far the changes have helped the team, as they keep chipping away at the new combination and seeing improvements with their performance at the track. That, coupled with some parity in the Pro Extreme class has put the team in a good position for the latter half of the season.

“We’re discovering a lot of really good things with the car and making progress every time we go racing. Thankfully, the big boys aren’t running away with the title yet, so I think our chances are looking really good for the end of the year,” Stanley says.

The North-South shootout will have an extra special meaning for the Stanley & Weiss team since the event is so close to home and at a familiar track.

“We usually do very well at Maryland International Raceway; that’s a track we know very well, for sure. Our team has always had good luck at any event there and it’s a great facility. The racing surface is top-notch and maintained very well so getting down the track isn’t an issue. We always have a ton of friends and family there since this is a home event for us. The pit will be full all weekend and it’s a great time for our team,” Stanley explains.
