No Prep racing is one of the hottest things in drag racing right now and is growing more each year by drawing in new fans and racers in droves with its exciting action. Tony Harvey is one of the racers who has become part of the No Prep scene and has some pretty deep roots in drag racing. With Redemption 10.0, Harvey is ready to show the No Prep world he’s ready to step into the spotlight on its biggest stage.
Harvey is no rookie in the world of heads-up racing, he has run in some of the toughest classes including Outlaw 10.5, Outlaw 8.5, and other forms of small tire racing. His racing experience goes beyond the track, and that’s partially what has drawn him to the No Prep world. “I come from street racing and been a street racer for 35 years, so I pretty much grew up around it. I started street racing when I was 15 and when the No Prep scene came out, it was as close as to street racing as possible and I wanted in. Where I live in west Texas there isn’t much class racing, so we just adapted to the No Prep deal,” Harvey says.
Besides tugging at the strings of his roots, Harvey enjoys the challenge that No Prep racing presents to him. In a world where cubic dollars can buy wins, it takes more than a fat bank account to run at the front of the No Prep class. “The No Prep scene became a tuners game and we’re all about not having to use all the power in the world to go A to B. When all the traction control had come into play in class racing it just got out of hand as far as the electronics go. The best equalizer we’ve had has been the track surface No Prep racing,” Harvey explains.
The weapon of choice for Harvey on the No Prep battlefield is his stunning 1969 Nova. The car is a true big tire car with a steel roof and quarters, that uses a 4-link style suspension. Under the hood is 673 cubic-inches of five-inch bore space power from Sonny Lenard. A pair of split Holley Dominator carburetors ride on top of the intake that has a custom Nitrous Outlet plumbing job inside the manifold. A Freakshow Performance torque converter and powerglide transmission finish the out the custom driveline. A full complement of MSD electronics keep fire in the pipes and run the car, while a RacePak dash and V300 unit take care of the data courtesy of Hopped Up By Hubbard.

Harvey feels that Redemption 10.0 is going to be his chance to put everything together and plans on expanding his team in the future. “I want to really run out front and do well at this event for sure. I think it’s our time to pick up a win, we’ve run very well this year, won some rounds, but just haven’t had the luck. I’d really like to see if we can win the Friday night deal and Saturday main event as well for Big Tire. We also have two small tire cars and we’re going to bring one to the event. My son and I both race, we’ve been a father and son team for over 10 years now so we’re going to try and team up very soon,” Harvey says.
