ROOKIE CRAMPTON’S FIRST WIN HEADLINES NHRA AT E-TOWN

Rookie sensation Richie Crampton earned his first career Top Fuel victory Sunday at the Toyota NHRA Summernationals in Englishtown, becoming the 100th different winner in the history of the class. Cruz Pedregon (Funny Car), Jeg Coughlin (Pro Stock), Andrew Hines (Pro Stock Motorcycle), and Von Smith (Pro Modified) were also victors at the third “major” of the season.


NHRA Summernationals

Richie Crampton scored his first career Top Fuel victory on Sunday at Raceway Park in Englishtown by defeating  Doug Kalitta in the money round, and in the process, became the 100th different winner in the history of the class. In Funny Car, Cruz Pedregon ran roughshod over the field, making the quickest pass in history in qualifying and parlaying it into a victory on race day, where he defeated Del Worsham, 4.12 to a 4.18. Andrew Hines did much the same in Pro Stock Motorcycle, as he and teammate Eddie Krawiec dominated the field and eventually met in the final round, with Hines taking the win light by a 6.82 to 6.83 count. Jeg Coughlin won his second race of the year in Pro Stock over a slowing Greg Anderson, and Von Smith notched his first of the season in Pro Modified over Jason Hamstra, running 5.96 in the final.

Chevy High Performance Nationals

Mark Carlyle and his incredible twin-turbo Corvette led the winners’ list at the Chevy High Performance Nationals at the Atlanta Dragway, as he scored in the LSX Drag Radial class with a 4.93 in the money round to take down Joe Dedona’s trailing 5.38. Ron Mowen won LSX All Motor in the debut of his new ’99 Chevy Camaro, downing many-time class champ Judson Massingill in the final, 8.44 to an 8.72. Kentucky native Adam Preston rolled to the LSX Real Street title with an 8.27 to 8.35 victory over George Farkouh, and Peter Huff won out in LSX Rumble with his ’99 Corvette, running 10.51 on his 10.50 index.

NHRA Division 5

Clint Neff led the list of winners at the NHRA West Central Division Lucas Oil Series event at the Brainerd International Raceway with his victory in Competition Eliminator, as he edged out a dead-late Bruno Massel in the final. Todd Curtis was dead-on his 10.85 dial-in in the Super Stock final to defeat Randy Hopkins, and Scott Dugdale took Stock honors when opponent Dale Findell went a scant .002 red in the money round.

MIROCK

Virginia’s Danny Cox rode his ’13 Suzuki to victory in Pro Street at the Fast by Gast Summer Nationals at the Maryland International Raceway, running 7.20 in the final to oust Doug Gall’s 7.26, after the pair outlasted a strong field of 17 bikes. Jeremy Teasley took Real Street honors from the No. 1 qualifying spot, downing Rickey Gadson in the final, 7.87 to 8.02, and Cameron Shelton edged out Darryl Hollins in the 4.60 index class by a narrow 4.64 to 4.66 count.

Prize Fight

The Ohio Valley Raceway in Louisville, Kentucky hosted the inaugural Prize Fight over the weekend, featuring many of the heavy hitters in small-tire racing from across the south. After two days of intense qualifying and eliminations action, it was the team of Jason Carter and Mark Micke grabbing Pro Drag Radial honors with their Chevy Malibu, while Darren Hilterbran won out in X275 and Shawn Pevlor notched Ultimate Street honors.
