Mountain Motor Pro Stock (MMPS) wins don’t come easy. Brothers Cory and Dillon Voss, along with their father Kenny, have been chasing an MMPS victory since they stepped up to the class from Pro 632. Their hard work paid off at the IHRA Outlaw Pro Mod Nationals when they picked up the victory and a big payday.
The Voss family has been grinding away in the MMPS class for three years. Cory handles the tuning, Kenny is in the shop building horsepower with Cory, and Dillon wheels “The Bad Banana” Cobalt. There’s plenty of good chemistry with this family-based team, so it was just a matter of time before they got to hoist a trophy in the winner’s circle.
Running for a $15,000 prize at the IHRA Outlaw Pro Mod Nationals didn’t impact the team at all. They approached race day like it was any other event, cool, calm, and collected.
“It really was business as usual for us. We went to the final two weeks ago at the IHRA event at this track, so we felt we had a good handle on the track. Our goal was to go down the track and make consistent runs. I was doing my job as a driver, cutting good lights, and the car did its job,” Dillon explains.
In the final, Dillon was set to face multi-time MMPS champion John Montecalvo. This matchup didn’t change Dillon or the team’s mindset at all, they were ready to go to work.
“John is a great person. His crew chief, Lump, and Cory are good friends, and they bounce ideas off each other all the time. We were just happy to be in the final and were ready to do the best we could to turn on that win light,” Dillon says.
Montecalvo had issues getting his car staged and timed out. Dillon really wasn’t aware there was an issue until right before Montecalvo’s tree dropped and gave him the red light. The only thing Dillon was focused on was his side of the tree and the job at hand.
This win is a big deal for the Voss family racing program on many levels. It gave them that first win, provided a boost in confidence, and the payday will allow them to be even more competitive for the rest of the season.
“That payout is going to help us get parts to keep the engine fresh. We’ve got both motors out and in the shop getting looked over now. Dad and Cory are doing a great job in the shop making power for us, and this is just going to give them more tools to work with. We’re excited to see what the rest of the season brings now for sure,” Dillon says.
The Voss family racing operation is a classic example of a family that races together, stays together. They work hard for every win light and pulling off a big victory like this is the kind of validation that will advance their program to a new level.
