The bad idea fairy can come in many shapes and sizes, for drag racers, it usually comes in the form of a project car. You start to think about a build, do some mental gymnastics, and the next thing you know, you’re on Facebook Market place making a poor financial decision….
Well, Dragzine’s latest project car was born from one idea, and was then twisted into something totally different. Instead of just building another typical muscle car with an LS-based engine, we decided to jump into the “Mopar or no car” camp. That’s right, no “played out” LS engine here, we’re going big cubes with boost.

Project Hustler might not be much to look at right now, but it’s going to be one fast ride when we’re done with it…
Meet Project Hustler, our 1952 Dodge Wayfarer that’s going to get 426 cubic-inches of GEN 3 HEMI horsepower stuffed under the hood. Jon Moore and his team at Moorespeed Performance are going to help us turn this rough looking ride into something totally awesome. The Dodge is going to get a full 25.3 chassis so we can shoot for some serious ETs at the track.
We’re going to work with the crew at Blackbird Performance to build a nasty HEMI that will have plenty of boost on tap for the street or the strip. Blackbird Performance has a proven track record with the GEN III HEMI platform, and they know how to coax some big horsepower out of these engines. We plan on really pushing what a boosted street-driven modern HEMI engine can do.
We got a couple of engines, transmissions, engine hoist, and sand blasting setup out of the deal too...
As for the rest of the car, we’re still in the planning phase, but we’ll have lots of updates on Project Hustler as we make progress on the build. Our plan for the Dodge is to build a unique car that’s designed to be a drag-and-drive machine. We’re going to incorporate plenty of tricks we’ve seen in the field that are required to make a drag-and-drive car survive a week-long torture test.
We’re going to generate a ton of content on Project Hustler as the build progresses. The plan is to pull the curtain back as far as we can and show you what goes into a project like this. There will be tech videos that cover how we approach certain parts of the build, full-length update videos on what we’ve done, and much more.
