Grassroots drag racing events continue to grow and thrive across the country. Street Car Braggin Rights (SCBR) is the brainchild of Nate Prater, and it’s about as grassroots as you can get. Prater has cultivated an event that makes your average racer feel like a superstar, and the 2025 edition of SCBR May 15-17 is poised to be the biggest yet.
SCBR packs a lot of racing into three days, along with a massive car, motorcycle, and truck show. On the racing side of things, SCBR has 17 classes and there’s something for every type of racer on the menu. When you mix all of that together, you get an event that hits on all cylinders and is one heck of a show.
Prater has put a significant amount of time and effort into making SCBR 2025 a balanced event for racers and fans. Fans get to check out the stacked car show, great racing, and an epic fireworks display as well. For the racers, SCBR has over $100,000 in guaranteed payouts across all classes of racing.
“We’ve made some great additions for 2025. Besides our normal classes, we added roll racing for the first time, and we are pumped to announce it is the largest purse in roll race history. We added a Stick Shift Outlaw class that already has 30+ registered in the first two weeks since we opened registration. If you’re a fan of the man peddle this class is guaranteed to be one of the baddest gear-banging events in the country. We also added a DCT vs AWD Unlimited Class that has multiple 200mph Lambos’ and GTRs already locked in,” Prater says.
Another big change for SCBR in 2025 is its venue. The explosive growth of SCBR required a bigger facility, so Prater made the decision to move the event to the legendary Rockingham Dragway in Rockingham, North Carolina.
“Our biggest change is our location. SCBR has grown rapidly and we needed a venue that truly is capable of growing with us. There are tons of great tracks in the Southeast and it was challenging for us to make a decision. An NHRA-affiliated track was the first requirement. We have been extremely fortunate to work with the NHRA to offer The Speed For All Wally at every SCBR we have put on since day one. After speaking with Dan VanHorn at Rockingham Dragway, it was extremely clear to us that it was the right move. We plan for Rockingham Dragway to be SCBRs home for many years to come,” Prater explains.
Prater’s goal is simple, he wants to attract every kind of racer to SCBR and make them feel at home.
“We ultimately want to bring in the fastest street cars in the country. When you win a class at SCBR, we want it to be known you went up against the best. SCBR ’22 was our first race event, it was a single day and all classes were N/T. Since then, we’ve carried over a few N/T classes including Small Tire and Overdrive. Both classes have sold out the last two years. The OD class this year sold out in two weeks, and we are still half a year out from the event. Having a combination of no time and boards on classes gives us an opportunity to really bring in the elite from both sides,” Prater says.
In a short period of time, Prater has built SCBR into an absolute juggernaut of an event. This has been accomplished by treating the racers like they’re the biggest show in town and giving fans more than enough entertainment value for their dollar. Another big goal for Prater is to continue to give back to the racers through payouts. Prater is confident they’ll be able to pay SCBR racers over $250,000 as the event continues to grow.
“I hope we can play a small part in the growth of drag racing. When I was a kid, one of my favorite things to do was go to Carolina Dragway for Mike Hill’s races, or the Night of Fire to see the jet cars. I’d go to school the next week and draw Jr Dragsters with the paint scheme I wanted. I never did get a JR dragster, but when I got my first car in high school there was hardly a Thursday night I wasn’t at the track racing. I’m hopeful we can help create that spark in someone else,” Prater states.
It’s easy to see why Street Car Braggin Rights has experienced such meteoric growth. Since Prater has put racers and fans first, the staging lanes and stands have been full of people willing to be a part of SCBR.
