Jose Gonzalez and his El General/Q80 Racing team served up one of the most stunning performances ever by a turbocharged doorslammer over the weekend, during the PDRA’s World Finals, held at the Virginia Motorsports Park. Gonzalez, driving the Pro Line-prepared C7 Corvette that was damaged in a crash just over a week ago at the very same track in testing, stormed to the quickest eighth-mile pass ever by a turbo car during Friday evening’s qualifying, going 3.527-seconds at 225.97 mph. The monster run placed him atop the provisional Pro Extreme qualifying order for what may well be the first time in class history.
Gonzalez recorded a .941 60-foot and 2.430-second 330-foot clocking on the run. Before the incident in testing, Pro Line’s Eric Dillard had driven the Corvette to an impressive 3.56, and on a subsequent early shutoff pass, was actually a few numbers quicker, giving tuner Steve Petty and the Pro Line gang assurance that numbers just like the 3.52 at the World Finals were possible.
Gonzalez later lost his position atop the field to Q80 Racing teammate Brandon Snider, but he wasn’t done with the big numbers just yet, as he ran a quicker and faster 3.524 at 228.00 mph in the opening round of eliminations to dispose of Wesley Jones. A 3.61 in the second round wasn’t enough to fend off eventual race winer Badir Ahli, as Gonzalez got loose and had to lift short of the finish stripe. He did share that on his second round run, the car was 1.1 seconds quicker to 330-feet, which the team believes would’ve equated to a 3.50-flat. Regardless, the supercharged contingent has definitely put on notice that turbo cars mean business, and for Gonzalez and the entire Pro Line, El General, and Q80 Racing teams, 2016 can’t come soon enough.
