It wasn’t the first, but on this day that didn’t matter, because it was the quickest.
On Saturday afternoon, Texan Jason Michalak made the quickest drag radial pass in official competition in history in his Bad9er Racing screw-blown Chevrolet Corvette, blasting to a 3.979 at 194.38 mph during qualifying for the Outlaw Street Car Reunion II at the Memphis International Raceway.
Michalak’s run is only the second three-second pass ever recorded officially, coming behind Brad Edwards’ barrier-shattering 3.99 at the Radial Fest in Huntsville last fall. Edwards himself has been quicker in testing, roaring to a 3.947 back in Huntsville at the close of the year, as has Keith Berry, who went 3.97 in Bradenton in testing, and Rob Valden with a 3.96 at 201 mph blast, also in Bradenton.
Event promoter Tyler Crossnoe, one-half of what’s known as the track prep “Dream Team”, along with VP Racing Fuels’ Jacon Rueckert, was visibly ecstatic with the numbers on the scoreboard, pumping his fists at the starting line after in celebration of the big number everyone knew could and likely would come.
Michalak got it done using AFCO Racing shocks on his Corvette, which have been customized for the application the “The Shock Nerd” Mark Menscer.
Oh, and did we mention shortly before the run, it was snowing?
