That didn’t take long.
The American Drag Racing League’s Technical Services Director Chris Bell and SuperCar Shown Technical Director Jimmy Holzman on Wednesday issued a revision in the minimum weights for the the much talked-about new eliminator to promote competitiveness between the supercharged and naturally-aspirated combinations of the Cobra Jet and Dodge Challenger Drag Pak that comprise the category.
At the inaugural contest in Houston, the supercharged Cobra Jets of Bo Butner and Chris Holbrook put some gap between themselves and the three Drag Paks in attendance – all with naturally-aspirated V-8 or V-10 engines for power. In qualifying, Holbrook was more than a tenth ahead of the quickest Mopar, and Butner .04-seconds and change – and it didn’t get any better in eliminations either as the Mustangs ran roughshod over David Buckner and the Southand dodge cars of Joseph Teuton and Kevin Helms.
Effective as of April 11, these are the new weight minimums for the given engine and power adder (or lack thereof) combinations for the SuperCar Showdown.
Effective on April 11, 2012, the new weight restrictions are:
3150 lbs: All vehicles using a naturally-aspirated V8 engine under 400 cubic inches
(Change: 100 pounds removed)
3250 lbs: All vehicles using a naturally-aspirated V8 engine over 399 cubic inches
(Change: New classification)
3350 lbs: All vehicles using a naturally-aspirated engine with more than eight cylinders
(Change: 50 pounds removed)
3600 lbs: All vehicles using a supercharged or turbocharged engine
(Change: 50 pounds added)
Like those calling the shots at the ADRL, we’re hoping to see a slew of these cars turn out for the next event in Bristol, and hopefully this change goes a long way toward bringing out some previously disadvantaged racers.
