As the book closes on another exciting and competitive Hot Rod Drag Week competition, champions rose to the top and claimed their accolades during the awards ceremony on Friday evening after the final day at Gateway Motorsports Park.
Many racers and crewmembers live and breathe Drag Week, assembling specifically-built cars and combinations, just to maximize efforts of going into the Hot Rod history books. The buzz going into the 2015 edition of Drag Week was unmatched with Tom Bailey and Jeff Lutz’s dueling ’69 Camaros that caught much attention before the week kicked off. Until another piece of the puzzle was taken away, Larry Larson made the announcement that he was withdrawing from Drag Week competition and would not be running the week long traveling extravaganza. Lutz wasn’t able to make it to Day 2 and the Unlimited crown was sitting in Tom Bailey’s reach with just making solid passes at the remaining tracks on the schedule.
Tom completed the task and ended the week with a 6.784 at 219 mph average to take the Unlimited crown in his Sick Seconds 2.0 Chevrolet Camaro. Bryant Goldstone was able to hold off Drag Week veteran Joe Barry in the Ultimate Iron category. Tom McGilton took his
Larson Race Cars built Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 to the Pro Street Power Adder title defeating Tina Pierce, known from her role in the Street Outlaws television show. Rick Prospero’s Mazda RX-7, powered by a twin turbocharged Big Block Chevrolet took an easy win in Modified Power Adder. George Gallimore and Frank Saponaro had the closest and most competitive fight for the title, rolling down to the final day with Gallimore locking the Super Street Big Block Power Adder class with another 7-second blast in his Monte Carlo which put his average to a 7.76 to defeat Saponaro’s 7.90 average. We at DragZine want to congratulate all the class winners from the 2015 running of Drag Week and we all wish you the best of luck for next season!
