The battle cry for decades in the drag racing world has always been “there’s no replacement for displacement,” but technology has turned that idea on its head. These days, small displacement engines run deep into the five and six-second zone in the 1/4-mile on a regular basis.

Carlos Olivo lowered the boom on the Renegade vs Modified field at the World Cup Finals last week when he uncorked a 5.86 at 243 mph in his Honda K24-powered GXP. The mighty four-cylinder Honda engine was built by Scarface Performance and is backed by a Liberty transmission. A single 88mm Precision Turbo & Engine turbocharger feeds the small displacement mill its boosted air.

Olivo’s pass set the four-cylinder engine world record, was the first four-cylinder-powered run to go over 240 mph, was the first four-cylinder powered run in the 5.80s, and was the first and only Honda in the 5’s.. It also put Olivo in the number one qualifier spot in the Renegade vs Modified class by nearly two full tenths of a second.

According to Olivo, he didn’t think it was that good of a pass from inside the car, and believes there’s even more potential left in the K24.

“I knew it was on a good pass, but I didn’t think it was that good of a pass. The 60-foot times haven’t been that good, but it makes up for it down track and makes some big speed. It’s a big achievement for us…we dreamed it and made it happen. There’s absolutely more left in the car. It went a 1.03 to the 60, and we know it can go in the .960 range based on the data we have. I think it will be run in the 5.70s and on a good run it will hit 5.60s.”
