NHRA Pro Modified standout Chad Green will make his return to the Mello Yello Drag Racing Series tour in grand fashion at the upcoming Lucas Oil Products Summernationals at Indianapolis, as he will make his competition debut in Funny Car in a Ford Mustang under the Tim Wilkerson Racing umbrella.
Green, who earned his Funny Car license in 2017 and has made subsequent laps in testing at various points since, will pull double-duty in Funny Car and Pro Mod at the second of two back-to-back national events at Lucas Oil Raceway outside Indianapolis. Class veteran Wilkerson will oversee the operation, which is being run out of his Springfield, Illinois shop, with son, Daniel, serving as crew chief for what Green intends to be his only appearance in Funny Car this season.
“I am excited about getting the opportunity to team up with Tim Wilkerson racing in my new Fuel Funny Car,” Green stated. “Getting the chance to work with Tim and drive his car the last few years has been a really great opportunity for me and I can’t think of a better fit for me at this point. As of now we only have one race planned for this year but we’ll see what happens.”
For Green, the Indy event will be a fitting return, as he endured the wildest ride of his racing career there less than a year ago at the NHRA U.S. Nationals over Labor Day weekend. During qualifying, Green lost control of his Chevrolet Camaro and somersaulted at upwards of 200 mph, sustaining back injuries that sidelined him for the remainder of the year. Green marked his return to Pro Mod competition at the Throwdown In T-Town in Tulsa, Oklahoma in mid-May.
In addition to primary backing from his business, Bond-Coat Inc., Green’s Funny Car effort will receive support from hand tool and storage brand Boxo USA, along with Tahiti Village.
