Delightful Data: The Advantages Of A Trailer-Based Weather Station

Racers at every level are always looking for ways to improve their program, and one of the tools that will make an immediate impact is a weather station. A weather station provides racers with data they can use to improve a tune-up or predict how their vehicle will perform. Using a trailer-based weather station is one of the best ways to harvest accurate weather data.

Handheld weather stations are very popular among racers, but they are only as good as the location they’re taking readings in. If you’re taking measurements with a handheld weather station in the staging lanes, the heat being produced by vehicles will have an impact on the temperature reading, and that means the density altitude measurement will be off. That difference will ultimately have an influence on the data the handheld weather station provides and it will impact how you dial or tune a car.

Fred Bartoli from Altronics explains how a trailer-based weather station removes the possibility of certain errors from the prediction equation.

“Because the PerformAIRE PRO trailer-based weather system is located at the trailer, a stationary reference point, it is unaffected by outside sources, and will accurately measure small changes to the surrounding environment that can easily influence the performance of the race vehicle. Some question if measuring at the trailer is different than at the starting line; remember that the race vehicle is traveling over an 1/8- or 1/4-mile, so measuring at the starting line is no better than standing at the finish line. Ideally, measuring mid-track might be the best if that were possible, but being a few hundred feet away in the pit area realistically is also just as good, and will most likely measure a relative weather change more accurately.”

This type of data will assist a racer with an engine tune-up for a heads-up car, or give a bracket racer the information they need to come up with the perfect dial-in. Later this year we’ll be taking a much deeper dive into the world of trailer-based weather stations with Altronics to show what they’re capable of.
