DeWayne Mills Sets Boosted Radial Record, Second Driver Into 3.70s

It would seem that anything DeWayne Mills puts his mind to, he can accomplish — even setting a radial tire record in the sweltering mid-summer heat.

Mills, from Sand Springs, Oklahoma, has been ravaging the radial tire world over the last handful of years, winning races left and right while setting national records in the NMCA Radial Wars category and continually challenging for the outright Radial vs The World record. While a run at Steve Jackson’s 3.75-second record will have to wait for cooler air, Mills took advantage of stellar track prep in some not-so-stellar weather on Saturday night at the PSCA’s Rage by the River at the Gateway Motorsports Park near St. Louis to set a new high water mark for turbocharged entries in his “Golden Gorilla” Camaro.

Mills clicked off a stout 3.811-second blast at 207.66 mph during Friday’s qualifying rounds and vowed that he would top the turbo record, Rob Valden’s 3.80, by weekend’s end. On Saturday evening, with the air temperature around 80 degrees and the race track cooled down to an estimated 100 degrees, Mills uncorked the first-ever 3.7-second run by a turbocharged drag radial car, a 3.799, which also marked him only the second man into the 70s for any power adder combination in the class. The record-setting run was paired with a 206.45 mph speed.

If there was any doubt that his performance was a fluke that night, Mills added another 3.81 for good measure in the final round, but was denied the victory on a gargantuan holeshot by Daniel Pharris, losing to a slower 3.90 for the crown.
