Noted engine builder and racer Anthony DiSomma and the Desert Demons Racing team absolutely dominated the PDRA’s season-ending event at the Virginia Motorsports Park over the weekend, collecting a pair of wins and a No. 1 qualifying effort with their twin-turbocharged Ford Mustang. And they did so with the assistance of traction control guru Shannon Davis and the trick new Profiler unit from his North Carolina-based Davis Technologies.
The first order of business in Virginia was the completion of the PDRA’s Dragstock event, which was postponed at its original venue in Rockingham and rescheduled to take place during qualifying for the PDRA Championship Finals. DiSomma was the No. 6 qualifier for the Dragstock event in the Pro Boost category with a 3.92 best, and dispatched Doug Winters, Kevin Rivenbark, and Tommy D’Aprile to punch his way into the final round, having run 3.85 and 3.88 in the previous two rounds. The final round with Larry Higginbotham, however, was a strange one, as both drivers left before the tree was activated. Initially, it was unknown who left first, but the victory was later awarded to DiSomma and the Desert Demons crew.
With his 3.855 effort in the combination qualifying/eliminations, DiSomma sat atop the race day field for the Championship Finals, outpacing a strong contingent of 30 cars in the legal Pro Modified-style category. In eliminations, DiSomma and his Profiler-equipped machine laid down a 3.92 to edge David Monday, a 3.91 to defeat D’Aprile, a stunning 3.83 to best Rivenbark, and an even quicker 3.82 in the final round to hold off a quicker Todd Tutterow on a holeshot.
“These guys are Incredible,” Davis exclaimed. “Saud Alzabin is a heck of a tuner, Anthony DiSomma builds one hell of an engine, and Jerry Bickel builds an awesome race car. The guys on the team — Ahmed Al-sadadi, Mohammed Al-Sabbagh, Joe Lepone Jr., and Anthony do a great job prepping and running the car. These guys kept it running like clockwork, were a lot of fun to hang out with, and are a very talented group.
“I’m really impressed with the power of the DRE engine, and the fact that it just kept going rounds with virtually no maintenance,” continued Davis. “I saw the plugs out a few times, but that was about it. We had a little trouble with the rear end, but it was changed in a matter of minutes. It probably just couldn’t handle the power. It was really a privilege to work with these guys. I’m really happy with the way that Saud embraced the new Profiler and rolled it right into his awesome tunes. The car was just flawless all week.”
Davis Technologies’ Profiler, unveiled to the world late last year, is a radical new device that controls horsepower to achieve a target wheel speed, and has already been an integral part of a number of world records and major race victories.
