Drag racing is the kind of sport that’s shared across generations and families. The Stanfield family has horsepower and drag racing in its blood. They build engines together and race together, but this past weekend, father Greg faced off against his son Aaron in the final round of Pro Stock at the NHRA Sonoma Nationals. This historic father-son matchup was a throwback to the days when Warren and Kurt Johnson would square off for the trophy, the money, and the bragging rights at Thanksgiving dinner.
This race had so many layers to it, and that’s what makes it so special. Greg had stepped away from a successful Pro Stock racing career before returning with Elite Motorsports. Previously, Greg had 28 final round appearances and six wins behind the wheel of a Pro Stock car. Aaron has blazed his own Pro Stock trail with 26 final round appearances and 14 wins.
When the tree dropped, Aaron had cut the better .016 light to Greg’s .030 to take an early lead. In the end, Greg pulled out the win with a 6.552 to Aaron’s 6.568. The margin of victory was just two-thousandths of a second. Races just don’t get much closer than that.
It’s no secret that Elite Motorsports has struggled a bit in 2025, but this father/son all-Elite final round really gave the team the charge it needed moving into the back half of the season.
“It was huge for Elite to come out on top here. Elite has been working double overtime to try to get our cars faster, and we’re showing that in qualifying, we just needed to have it show on race day,” Greg said. “I’m ecstatic right now. I don’t know how I’m sitting here with this trophy, but they picked me to win this.”
The gravity of the moment wasn’t lost on Aaron. He learned a lot about racing by watching his father compete when he was growing up.
“They asked me if I cut my dad any slack in the finals, heck no, he wouldn’t do that for me. And I wouldn’t want it any other way,” said Aaron. “It’s an incredibly special moment, I grew up watching my dad race Pro Stock, he’s always been my hero, I had to learn it from somewhere, he’s taught me everything, so I credit my accomplishments to him. It’s pretty dang cool.”
There’s a better than average chance this won’t be the last time we see Greg and Aaron square off in Pro Stock. The amount of driving talent between these two is amazing, and it highlights just how important family really is in drag racing.
