Flashback Friday eBay Find: Gene Snow’s “Snowman” ’74 Vega Flopper

Perhaps you were there to witness what most would describe as the golden age of Funny Cars, when showmanship and flash were every bit the ingredient that performance was. You may have wrenched on a friend of a friends’ flopper, or read about them in magazines. You may have been barely tall enough to see over the fence, but clearly in awe of their exciting prowess. And as well, you very well may have dreamed of donning a firesuit, concocting your own unique nick name like “Jungle Jim” or “the Mongoose,” and climbing behind the wheel of one of the fire-breathing beasts.

For most, owning one of these cars during that era was simply that, a dream. Today, with the explosive resurgence of vintage drag racing, many who were involved back then have jumped back into the game while others yet act on their childhood dream and join the fray. Many ofthe “nostalgia” cars you see both competing on the quarter mile, performing in the Cacklefests, and on display in museums are simply recreations. Actual, original floppers are few and far between these days, what with nearly 40 years passing since their heyday. But every now and then, one of these old gems pops up on the radar.

Currently being auctioned on Ebay (but presently without any bids) is Gene Snow’s original 1974 Vega Revell Model Company “Snowman” Funny Car that was recently unearthed at a hot rod shop in Jackson, MS. The Vega was part of Revell’s Drag Team that became famous during the mid 1970’s. Snow, a former NHRA and AHRA Funny Car champion, commissioned Steve Plueger and S&R Rae Cars to construct the chassis that utilized a 6-71 supercharged Keith Black Hemi for power, backed by a Lenco transmission. The Vega body featured a Red Candy finish with lettering by renowned motorsports artist Kenny Youngblood. During it’s tenture under Snow, this car ran as quick as 6.34 and 230 MPH.

The auction listing provides a complete rundown of the history of this car as it exchanged hands over the years up to the point of its discovery as the original “Snowman” flopper, along with detailed information of the restoration and what is being included in this pretty rad deal, so head over and check it out.
