Continuing to develop new products based on proven designs is how aftermarket companies push the envelope in drag racing. Garrett’s original GTX5533R Gen I turbo was a ground breaking unit that powered racers to victories all over the world. Now, Garrett has improved on that winning design with the GTX5533R Gen II, and is ready to unleash a new level of boosted power on the racing world.
The GTX5533R Gen II is available in five different compressor inducer sizes: 85mm, 88mm, 91mm 94mm and 98mm. This wide range of different sizes allows the turbo to fit the rules for NHRA Pro Mod, NMCA Radial Wars, PDRA Pro Boost, and many other classes.
There are four new features that have been added to the GTX5533R Gen II turbo. A redesigned compressor housing has been implemented that is able to flow more air efficiently, and create more power. The new housing also has a ported shroud that has been fully machined and includes a V-band outlet.
The compressor wheel is forged and has been machined to provide better aerodynamics for high volume airflow. This new wheel has the ability to flow enough air to generate up to 2,500hp on specific engine combinations. Garrett has added a billet aluminum back plate to the turbo, this removed four pounds from the Gen II model over the Gen I.
A machined speed sensor port is another new feature that gives racers the option to add a turbo speed sensor for critical data acquisition. The GTX5533R Gen II is sold as a super-core, so racers will need to purchase the turbine housing of their choice separately.
