Drivers’ seats today are safer than at any point throughout motorsports history. Seat manufacturing companies like Innovative Safety Products are to thank for that fact. The downside is today’s headrests extend so far that it can sometimes make it difficult for drivers to get in and out of their car. This can seem like a small inconvenience but if something happens where a driver needs to get out in a hurry it can spell disaster if a driver can’t get out quick.
At IMIS 2012, Innovative Safety Products was showcasing their answer to help drivers get in and out of their rides without sacrificing safety. “Basically we cut the left headrest and replaced it with a foam accessory that allows the headrest to pivot downward to help drivers get out fast if a situation arises where they need to get out quick,” explained owner and seat designer Kris VanGilder.
The headrest now has tether system that attaches to the dashbar or the roll cage. Drivers can quickly get out by using a quick release that is similar to what is used on a Hans device. As soon as the quick release is pulled the left side head rest will fold out of the drivers way and open up access to the driver’s window. “Especially for bigger drivers this is the answer to being able to get in and out of the car and still be safe while racing,” VanGilder explained.
