Make no mistake about it…if it’s got an engine and at least a couple of wheels, Todd Tutterow can find a way to make it quicker and faster.
Just two weeks ago, the former ADRL Pro Extreme champion had a rare miscue of a weekend at the Gateway Drags in St. Louis when his supercharged Mustang made heavy contact with the guardrail, cutting his weekend short and sending his gorgeous machine back to Larry Jeffers’ chassis shop for a complete front and rear clip replacement.
While others would’ve packed up at that point and been out of the game until repairs could be made, Tutterow, who makes his primary living these days racing and working on race cars, was right back on the horse. Before even giving his damaged racer a once-over, Tutterow was already on the starting line calling the tuning shots for other competitors, and just days later was back at it in his supercharged ’68 Camaro at Piedmont Dragway’s Big Dog doorslammer event.
Regarded as one of the finest supercharged tuners in the country, Tutterow showed the world what he could do with another form of boost earlier this week when he both tuned and drove the twin-turbocharged Plymouth Duster owned by Precision Turbo to a mind-numbing 216 mph blast during an R&D testing session with a pair of experimental turbos at North Carolina’s Farmington Dragway.

Those reporting the run — including individuals involved with the team — were quick to discount the naysayers, citing video evidence that all four wheels in fact remained on the ground through the traps, thus providing credence to the validity of the huge speed.
Tutterow was .972 to 60-foot, 2.67 to half track, and 3.88 out the back at 216 mph on the pass.
Pro Modified veteran Dennis Radford campaigned the Duster with the turbo combination early last season in the NHRA, but retreated to his trusty nitrous combination later in the year. The wicked-looking Plymouth has now resurfaced, and following the impressive numbers recorded in testing, it was announced on ADRL Live this week that Tutterow and the Precision Turbo team are planning to attend the upcoming ADRL U.S. Drags V in Richmond in the Pro Extreme category.
The struggles of the turbo combo to make up ground on the blower cars in Pro Extreme have been well-documented, but if there’s anyone that can put a little chip in their armor, it’s temporary-convert Todd Tutterow.
