The Haltech World Cup Finals Import vs Domestic presented by Wiseco event held every year in October at Maryland International Raceway is a spectacle unto itself, with racers and fans coming from other countries just for the event. The fall season is also beneficial to racers, as oftentimes sea level-or-below density altitude weather as well as racers’ drive to always improve is a recipe for record-setting runs. Such was the case this year as several records were reset, sometimes multiple times during the event.

Leading the import charge in the Outlaw vs. Extreme category was Rafael Famania’s 2020 La Natty Racing Corolla. Driven by Jesus Melendez, the Precision-turbocharged Toyota rocketed to a staggering 5.546 at 263.98 mph during qualifying and claimed the import 1/4-mile elapsed time world record (and six cylinder record) with that incredible run.

The notable performance put the team in the top spot in qualifying, and the PMS Race Cars-built, 2JZ-powered, and Rated R-tuned machine backed that pass up with a 5.55 during eliminations. They weren’t done, though, as Melendez went on to reset the MPH record with a 264.49 run in the quarter-finals. Unfortunately, he fell to John Odom and his prepped for prep, no-prep Nissan GTR in the semi-finals.

There import mark was set most recently in 2019, when Arnaldo Rodriguez went 5.557 with a likewise 2JZ-powered Scion FRS.
