Back in August, Nostalgia Gas driver Zack Bunnell of Ransomville, NY walked away from a scary ride as his Mister Magoo 1948 Anglia Gasser rolled onto its side and slid roughly 200 feet during an event at the Empire Dragway. Bunnell fought control right off the line as smoke was visible under the front wheel wells. After he launched and reached the tree, it was apparent something was amiss. Smoke was billowing out from the engine compartment, possibly engine oil, a loose hose, or even a burst transmission line, and caused the driver to over-correct, leading to the Anglia to going up on two wheels from each side.
Eventually, Bunnell lost the fight, laying over the classic Gasser and sliding on its side. At that point Bunnell was along for the ride as smoke trailed roughly 100 feet behind, making the accident appear worse than it really turned out. After a few tense moments, Bunnell escaped from the wreckage through the side door while the race car was still on its side.
The ensuing cleanup took about an hour, causing the racing program to extend long into the evening. The crash occurred during the first round of Nostalgia Gas eliminations for the two day Gasser Racing Series Byron Stack Memorial Gold Cup at Empire Dragway. Due to Mister Magoo only sustaining minor damage, it’s possible the car and driver will see action at the next Gasser Racing Series event at Leicester.
