Monster 632ci Pontiac Makes 1261HP with a Holley 1250

Steve Furr, NHRA Division 2 Top Dragster champion in 2009, is a mechanical engineer with 20 years of race experience. He’s been known to rebuild race engines and Powerglide race transmissions in his shop on the side, when he’s not running his American Racecar swing arm Top Dragster or his 1968 Super Rod Camaro.

Like any expert, he knows his limits, so when it came time to get some really big power into the Top Dragster, he turned to Scott Duggins at PAR Race Engines. Duggins, a 4-time IHRA World Champion himself, has been building winning racing engines since 1990. The two chose a 632-cid configuration, based on the Brodix 10.2 aluminum block, PB1200 12-degree CNC heads and PM1917 intake manifold.

Sitting atop that manifold is a Holley 1250 Ultra Dominator carburetor, whose all-aluminum construction saves 3.8 lbs over the competition. Specifically designed for big power applications, the 1250 Ultra provides infinite tunability and maximum airflow. The product just proved itself once again, as Duggins and Furr recently completed some dyno testing on the new engine.

“The new Holley Ultra 1250 carb jetted up to 100, made the same horsepower as my old tricked out carb did and with only an intermediate and main jet changes. Nothing else.” said Furr. The result – 1261 horsepower at 7200 rpm.

“The carb is very responsive and makes good power and torque. It’s also extremely light weight. This is definitely going to be a good piece,” Furr added.

Using the best components throughout, Duggins includes a Callies Magnum 4.75 stroke crankshaft, Manley 6.70 H-beam rods
and Diamond pistons w/JE 52 series pins. Even the little stuff gets top treatment, via Clevite bearings/A-C rings, Crane/PAR 4/7 swap cam/Crane Ultra Pro lifters and PSI 1248 springs with Manley Titanium retainers, locks and Manley Titanium valves.

That kind of attention to detail is what builds winners… and power. With the Holley 1250 Ultra on top, Farr noted that his new mill is the most powerful engine PAR has made using a single carburetor.

That’s how you build winners.
