During the first round of qualifying for the Get Screened America Pro Modified Series at the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals in Atlanta on Friday, doorslammer legend Pat Musi made hard contact with the guardrail in the shutdown area after his parachutes failed to deploy at the conclusion of a 6.147-second, 238.05 mph pass.
In his attempt to slow the car, Musi lost control of his ’09 Dodge Stratus and crossed over the centerline, tagging the right hand wall before veering back across into the left well. Musi was able to extract himself from the damaged race car, but was transported via ambulance to the nearby Northridge Hospital where it was discovered that he had suffered a fractured vertebrae in the crash.
Musi underwent a surgical procedure to insert titanium rods to repair the fracture on Sunday morning, and has reportedly been up and walking around this morning and in good spirits, and if all goes well, Pat could return to his Carteret, New Jersey home as soon as Tuesday or Wednesday.
Our best wishes to Pat on a speedy recovery and a swift return to the race track.
