Oakley’s crew of mad scientists have always been known as an over-the-top, cutting edge bunch, and their videographers recently proved why, teaming with Don Schumacher Racing’s team of drivers from the Top Fuel and Funny Car ranks for an official team video for the 2014 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series.
Envisioned and executed by the global sports/entertainment lifestyle brand, Oakley’s talented team of videographers defended on the Palm Beach International Raceway in south Florida last month for preseason testing at the PRO Winter Warm-up, bringing along with them a pile of incredible tools, including the technologically advanced RED Digital cinema cameras used by many Hollywood film makers. The Oakley team captured unique footage with cameras tracking along zip lines, a style commonly used by major networks at professional and college sporting events, and most perhaps most interestingly, dove into a cinematic first in drag racing, employing a much-talked-about drone camera that flew over the track, capturing the nitro-burning behemoths from high above.
“Oakley’s crazy designers and engineers are always innovating, imagining and detonating their competition, whether it’s their patented eyewear technologies, racing gear technologies, apparel or anything else,” said Ron Capps, pilot of the NAPA AUTO PARTS Funny Car for DSR.
“I’ve always been proud to be associated with them since the beginning when they came into drag racing. It’s just really awe-inspiring to see something so cutting edge with the cameras they were using at the test session. What they did with the different camera angles were things that we’ve all sat around and dreamed about being able to get shots of. Oakley has been a way of life for me. If you look in my closet it’s all Oakley from head to toe, including my racing gear. It’s always cool to do something with them.”
