The quickest and fastest Outlaw 10.5 racers in the nation solidified their claim at the Virginia Motorsports Park over the weekend, where they were invited to be a part of the Professional Drag Racers Association (PDRA) season-ending World Finals. The track, located a short drive from the class’ hotbed in Maryland and New Jersey, brought out all of the big hitters, and prime weather conditions combined with an always-fast VMP racing surface allowed them to absolutely tee off on the record books.

A total of nine runs in the three-second range were made during the course of qualifying and eliminations amongst four drivers, but none were more stunning than Markhall, Ontario native Nick Agostino’s 3.978, 203.61 mph blast in the semifinals of eliminations. With a 480 cubic inch powerplant situated between the fenders, Agostino’s performance marks the first and only small-block into the ‘threes’ in Outlaw 10.5, and the quickest run in official competition by a small-block on radials or 10.5W’s.
Agostino was ultimately defeated in the final by Mike Decker Jr., 3.98 to a 4.00, in a race decided by .044-seconds.
Decker Jr. led qualifying with a 3.985 at 193.83 mph from his screw-blown 2002 Camaro, followed closely by several racers who cracked into the ‘threes’ for the first time, including Jerry Mitrovic’s 1968 Camaro at 3.991, Agostino’s with a 3.994, and Frank Pompilio with a 3.999 with his twin-turbocharged 1967 Mustang. Check Ulsch, who just a week ago reset the Outlaw 10.5 world record with a crushing 3.94-second blast, was mired in fifth with what would have been a crushing run just a year ago — a 4.00.
After playing second fiddle for a couple of seasons to their radial tire cousins, it would seem that the game between the two competing categories is most certainly on.
