Our friends over at Peterson Fluid Systems, by virtue of their complete lineup of fluid transfer and oiling system components, earn a home on some of the most unique and radical projects on the planet. We always keep an eye on their Facebook page to see what sort of neat stuff they’ll be posting, and this month is a winner for sure.
For example, they’ve put together this video showing how their oil tank products come to be in response to the simple question, “Do you have robots weld your tanks?”
In fact, the tanks are not welded by robot but by a human being. However, the welding is only the last step in the process – before a single bead can be laid, a tank undergoes a multitude of manufacturing processes to build the bare parts necessary to construct the end product.
Starting with a simple piece of tubing, Peterson uses a variety of fixtures and machines to bend, coax, and shape the aluminum into the necessary dimensions. The video is a bit long at just over seven minutes, but well worth the watch if you’re a “How It’s Made” geek like those of us here at Dragzine headquarters.
After all of the individual components are created, have had their inlet and outlet holes machined into place, then subsequently cleaned, it’s time to hit the rotary table for the welding process to take place.
Now, we’ve met some pretty talented welders over the years, but welding on a table that spins at a set speed and doesn’t stop takes a serious skill that we’re willing to bet 99 percent of the people on this planet could never master. Peterson’s team of welders? They knock it right out of the park – and the finished product sure does look like a machine laid the beads. Check out the video!
