The Pro Top Outlaws, a primarily southern-based organization for heads-up dragster and altereds founded in 2000, has reemerged this season under the guidance of former president Ron Bales after the series came to a halt a coupe of years ago. The Pro Top Outlaws, which to some degree was a spinoff of the now defunct Super Eliminator and later Pro Outlaw category that the IHRA contested during the late 1990’s, features heads-up drag racing on the eighth mile for machines much like those in Top Dragster.
The renewed Pro Top Outlaws held their first race of the season last weekend at South Carolina’s Dorchester Dragway, where Paul Molnar kicked things off with a bang with a new track record pass of 3.77 seconds at 193 mph to lead the eight-car qualified field by a comfortable margin. He was trailed by Jody Stroud (3.88), Sheldon Bissessar (3.91), Eddie Careccia (3.94), John Sabastian (3.97), Burwell Kendrick (3.98), Rocky Flanagan (4.15), and Jerry Brewer (4.55).
In the final round, just as it should be, the two top qualifiers faced off for all the marbles as Stroud ousted Molnar for the first win of the season. The Pro Top Outlaws have another event scheduled at Dorchester September 4 and are in talks with other tracks to form a multi-race schedule to conclude the year, with hopes of contesting an eight-race schedule in 2012.
