Following the recent temporary closure of the Auto Club Dragway in Fontana, Calif. and the unknowns regarding when or if the facility will be green-
lighted to continue hosting racing events, Pacific Street Car Association officials announced on Tuesday their decision to move the Lucas Oil/Slick Mist Drags, originally scheduled for Fontana to the Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Slated for Sept. 7-9, the event will contest every PSCA class, along with Lucas Oil Top Comp and Jr. Dragster.
The uneasiness at Fontana led PSCA President Mel Roth into discussions with Las Vegas Motor Speedway Vice President of Racing Operations Chris Blair to ensure the scheduled event could soldier on, “Once again,” Roth said, “We are indebted to Chris Blair and his staff at The Strip. We are doing everything possible to relocate any events loss due to the unfortunate situation at Fontana and once again would like to thank Chris for stepping up and giving PSCA racers a place to race.”
“The loss of both the Fontana and Irwindale drag strips is a tough blow to our racing family,” Blair said. “We hope that by working with the various groups that supported these tracks during this difficult time, we can keep more racers interested in the sport until all of the issues are resolved and things are back to normal.”
“The addition of the September event places a PSCA event between our TRE Bracket Series/So-Cal Pro Gas event of Labor Day weekend and our Super
Chevy event of Sept. 15-16. Racers will have the opportunity to leave their rigs here at LVMS and get three great weekends of racing without the expense of towing their rigs back-and-forth.”
The Las Vegas Motor Speedway is set to host the upcoming PSCA Las Vegas Nationals presented by Ross Racing Pistons on Apr. 27-29 and the Magna Fuel West Coast Nationals Oct. 5-7.
The Auto Club Dragway in Fontana. Calif., situated within San Bernardino County, was forced to halt racing activities at the end of February in order for state the local officials to carry out additional environmental impact studies and reports. In the state of California, that’s politician speak for “we don’t like your drag strips and noisy cars around these parts.”
One PSCA event at Fontana has already been cancelled, and with three others on the schedule there for the remainder of the 2012 season, more changes will likely be forthcoming.
