Randy Westmoreland Goes For A Scary Ride At Small Tire Legends Event

Getting from A to B in a short wheelbase racecar that makes big power is a lot like wrestling with an alligator; it’s risky, takes a lot of concentration, and things can go wrong in the blink of an eye. Randy Westmoreland was trying to wrestle his very unique Mazda Speed 3 known as “Snow White” down the track at the Small Tire Legends event when the car decided it wanted to bite him like a giant reptile and take him on a scary ride.

The Small Tire Legends race at Thunder Road Raceway Park this past weekend was the biggest-paying No Prep event ever, with $100,005 going to the last racer standing. The biggest names in No Prep were there including Kye Kelley, Scott Taylor, Shane Lester, and even NHRA Pro Stock champion Bo Butner was on the property. With this much starpower and cash on the line, every racer at the event was keyed up and ready to go, including Westmoreland.

Snow White is nothing like the average Mazda Speed 3 you might see in the mall parking lot. Westmoreland enlisted 417 Motorsports to build a custom tube chassis for the car that would wear the Mazda’s hatchback skin at the track. Under the hood, Westmoreland replaced the small-displacement factory engine in favor of a large Chevy-based mill that used a Brodix block and AFR heads to generate power from the Precision turbo stuffing atmosphere into the intake. Behind the engine Westmoreland chose an M&M Transmission three-speed TH400 and Protorque EV1 torque converter to put the power down.

In this dramatic footage from National No Prep Racing Association, you can see just how violent Westmoreland’s crash was. The Mazda was going down the track fine, but after it drifted ever so slightly out of the groove, it made a huge move to the left and Westmoreland was just along for the ride. After hitting the wall and tumbling over it, the car came to a rest on its wheels. Thankfully the 417 Motorsports chassis did its job and kept Westmoreland safe. According to Westmoreland, he is looking at the possibility of rebuilding the car and bringing it back out.
